Have you ever achieved exactly what you set out to accomplish ~ and still felt something essential was missing? Or found yourself in a struggle that no amount of willpower or self-improvement seemed to resolve? If so, you may already be sensing the difference between two dimensions of life that Drs. Ron and Mary Hulnick of the University of Santa Monica (USM) have spent over 40 years illuminating: the Goal Line and the Soul Line.

USM is the Worldwide Center for the Study and Practice of Spiritual Psychology. Their framework ~ built around 33 foundational principles ~ doesn't ask you to abandon your earthly goals or your psychology. It asks you to hold them within a larger, more luminous context: the recognition that you are, first and foremost, a Soul using this human experience for the purpose of Awakening.

As a holistic psychotherapist, these principles are not just ideas I admire ~ they are the living ground of how I work. Let me share them with you.

Two Dimensions of Life: The Goal Line and the Soul Line

According to Drs. Hulnick, we simultaneously reside in two worlds. Understanding both is essential to living a fulfilling and conscious life.

PHYSICAL-WORLD REALITY

The Goal Line

The outer dimension of life ~ the stage upon which you play your role. Here, your primary vehicles are the mind and emotions. You take action, pursue results, and receive feedback from the world. Careers, relationships, finances, health outcomes ~ these all live on the Goal Line. It is real and it matters. But wins here stay here.

SPIRITUAL REALITY

The Soul Line

The inner dimension where Awakening actually occurs. The Soul Line is the realm of Spiritual Reality ~ of Healing, Learning, growing in Wisdom and Compassion, and coming to know your essential nature as Love. Wins on the Soul Line go with you. This is the dimension where your Spiritual Curriculum unfolds.

Most people are oriented almost exclusively around the Goal Line ~ measuring worth by outcomes, productivity, and achievement. Spiritual Psychology doesn't dismiss the Goal Line; it simply reveals that the Goal Line exists in service to the Soul Line. The outer experiences of your life ~ including the painful ones ~ are not obstacles to your purpose. They are the curriculum through which your Soul grows.

"Awakening doesn't take place externally in physical-world reality, although the benefits of Awakening can definitely be experienced on the Goal Line of your life. Rather, Awakening occurs internally within each person as a process — an ongoing series of experiences and awareness."
~ Drs. Ron & Mary Hulnick, USM

In holistic psychotherapy, this distinction becomes a living practice. When a client comes in carrying grief, burnout, or a persistent sense of emptiness despite outer success, we begin to explore: what might be happening on the Soul Line? What is this experience here to awaken

The 33 Principles of Spiritual Psychology

These are the actual 33 Principles as shared by Drs. Ron and Mary Hulnick through the University of Santa Monica, where they have guided students for more than 40 years. They serve as a foundation for understanding who we truly are, and for moving into the revelation of our spiritual nature.

THE NATURE OF GOD AND OUR ESSENTIAL NATURE

God is everything in existence both seen and unseen.

The nature of God is Love.

Since we are all a part of God, our essential nature also is Love — and we have the opportunity of knowing our Loving nature experientially, Here and Now.

We are not human beings with Souls; we are Souls using a human experience for the purpose of Awakening.

EARTH AS A SCHOOL FOR SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

Earth functions as a school for Spiritual Awakening, meaning Conscious Awareness of Principles #2 and #3. Everyone registers for their specific Curriculum.

Physical-world reality exists for the purpose of Spiritual Awakening; thus, all of life is for learning and growing spiritually.

Graduation is based upon mastering your lessons resulting in Wisdom and Compassion.

Everyone has the potential, resources, and destiny to graduate. There is no failure — only repeated opportunity.

Everyone will graduate. The only real variable is time and the only real time is Now.

Your primary goal is not to change the school; your primary goal is to graduate.

THE PROCESS OF AWAKENING

Awakening is a process, not an event.

Awakening can be accelerated by learning and implementing the Principles and Practices of Spiritual Psychology.

YOUR SPIRITUAL CURRICULUM AND UNRESOLVED ISSUES

Your Spiritual Curriculum consists of unresolved issues as well as opportunities for Service, sharing your gifts, and living into your Heartfelt dreams.

An unresolved issue is anything that disturbs your Peace.

Unresolved issues are not bad; they're simply part of your Spiritual Curriculum.

Unresolved issues are blessings, as they are opportunities for Healing and Awakening.

Accepting personal responsibility for your Spiritual Curriculum is empowering and opens the door to Freedom.

Nothing outside of you causes your disturbances.

THE INNER WORLD CREATES THE OUTER EXPERIENCE

All "becauses" ~ anything that disturbs your peace ~ are, in Reality, triggers to unresolved issues that are part of your Spiritual Curriculum, providing an opportunity for true Healing.

Outer experience is a reflection of inner reality.

Personal internal reality is subjective. Therefore, what you believe determines your experience.

Experiences you judge, you attract. They tend to proliferate, repeat, and multiply.

You create your future by how you respond to experiences now.

HEALING, INTENTION, AND THE HEART

There are no mistakes ~ only opportunities for Learning, Healing, and Awakening unto Love.

How you relate to an issue is the issue, or how you relate with yourself while you go through an issue is the issue.

Healing is the application of Loving to the parts inside that hurt or suffer ~ thereby dissolving them.

In your Universe, your word is your law; thus, the power of intention.

The mind is a tool to be used in service to the Heart.

SELF-LOVING, AUTHENTICITY, AND FREEDOM

Maintaining supportive disciplines is a demonstration of Self-Loving.

Intimacy is a natural and automatic by-product of honest, caring Self-expression.

Judgment is self-condemnation; Self-Forgiveness is Healing; and Compassion, Acceptance, Peace, and Joy naturally follow.

AWAKENING, EVOLVING, AND WHOLENESS

Loving, Healing, Awakening, and Evolving are all the same process whereby you experience deeper and deeper Awareness of your Essential Nature ~ your Authentic Self ~ already fully present and characterized by Unconditional Loving, Wisdom, Joy, Peace, Creativity, Compassion, Happiness.

A life lived in Acceptance is a life devoid of unnecessary emotional suffering. It's a life filled with Love.

How These Principles Live in the Therapy Room

When I sit with a client who is suffering, Principle 14 is always quietly present: an unresolved issue is anything that disturbs your peace. This reframe is quietly revolutionary. The disturbance isn't a flaw in the person ~ it is a signal, a pointer toward something in their Spiritual Curriculum that is ready to be healed.

Principle 25 ~ how you relate to an issue is the issue ~ shifts the entire therapeutic frame. We stop asking "how do we make this problem go away?" and start asking "how can you meet yourself with more compassion as you move through this?" That shift, from fixing to loving, is where transformation actually lives.

And Principle 26 ~ that healing is the application of Loving to the parts inside that hurt ~ is perhaps the most practically powerful of all. In session after session, I watch this work. Not insight alone, not behavioral change alone, but the turning of genuine, unconditional care toward the wounded places within. That is where dissolving happens.

The Goal Line and Soul Line distinction helps clients understand why they can succeed externally and still feel unwell internally. It gives language to an experience many people have but can't name. And it opens a doorway: if outer experience reflects inner reality, then the path to a different life begins inside.

These principles are not a religion. They are a context ~ a spacious, loving context ~ within which healing becomes not just possible, but inevitable.
